I am very ashamed to say I’m from Croatia. These last few weeks one of the most common topics of conversation is the Gay Pride that is planned to be held in Split, Croatia. There is a big amount of people who are threatening to attack the parade. Police will of course protect the parade, but that makes me sooo sad. Why would someone attack someone just because they are not straight? Love is love, isn’t it? Why would someone mind who is with whom? No one should care if you are a boy liking boys or a girl liking girls or whatever. There’s a huge political discussion about the pride and what will happen. Just yesterday a member of a right wing party said in national parliament that being gay is a mental illness and it should be treated. That is by the definition hate speech. I wouldn’t be surprised if the parade gets attacked, even with the policemen guarding it. And it will be broadcasted on every major European television. Please, please remember that not all of us are like that. I really don’t care if someone is gay or not. I’d be the happiest person ever if people here would be able to come out without being judged or even attacked. I have friends that are so clearly gay, but they are afraid to admit it, cause they know they will be judged by a lot of people, and unaccepted by the majority. Again please, when you see an article or a coverage of Gay Pride in Croatia, bear in mind not all Croatians are complete arseholes. There are some of us who accept everyone and everything. We don’t care what race, religion, nationality, sexuality or anything else you are. Some of us care just what kind of person you are!

but like you said, not all Croatians are “arseholes”. so you really shouldn’t be ashamed of being Croatian just because...

Even though there is slightly more acceptance here in the US, there are still some very vocal instances of hate speech here, too. The good news is there are more young people who think like you and me, and things will start to change for the better.
